Prairie Village is a city of 22,000 people, nestled to the east of Overland Park, Kansas. As part of Johnson County, it has become a well-established bedroom community for the Kansas City Metropolitan Area.
Prairie Village was recognized as a city in 1951, although its history began much earlier. As covered wagons rolled west in the mid 1800s, small communities of farms and homesteads sprang up along the Santa Fe Trail. Shortly after Thomas Porter bought 160 acres in 1858, several other landowners settled in the budding community of Prairie Village. J.C. Nichols, a successful land developer, mapped out the Prairie Village housing development in the early 1940s, predominantly for soldiers returning home from the war, designing the framework for the city’s present layout.
Prairie Village is mainly residential in nature. Families enjoy more than 64 acres of maintained parks in their close-knit community, along with the benefit of the top-ranked Shawnee Mission School District. Corinth Square Shopping Center and Prairie Village Shopping Center provide colorful retail destinations, while residents also have easy access to the big city for entertainment and leisure.
